Description of current research and/or professional activities:
The New Hampshire Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is involved in service, research, and teaching activities. Our service activities are conducted in cooperation with the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture, Foods and Markets and the New Hampshire State Veterinarian. The primary service mission of the lab is to provide personnel and facilities capable of monitoring and identifying infectious and other diseases of animals that might threaten the health of other New Hampshire animals or humans. Along with maintaining these capabilities, the lab offers a wide range of fee for service pathology tests for veterinary practices in the northern New England Region. As director of the NHVDL, I serve on number of state committees concerned with the monitoring and controlling animal diseases such as rabies, Lyme disease, and viral encephalitis that can be transmitted from domestic or wild animals to humans.
Opportunities for undergraduate students to gain laboratory and veterinary medical experience are available through work-study and student labor employment and independent investigations offered by the lab.
Our laboratory also provides pathology tests and assists with protocol designs for research projects that are based on the UNH campus and for off campus biomedical and aquaculture companies. Researchers and graduate students whose research projects include pathology studies or individual tests are encouraged to meet with staff veterinary pathologists for advice or information about specific tests and services. Staff veterinarians frequently serve on graduate committees.
Additional Information:
The diagnostic lab is a cornerstone of the UNH Preveterinary Medicine Program. NHVDL veterinarians (Drs. Joe Moore, Alice Roudabush, and Roger Wells) coordinate the program and serve as academic advisors for most students planning to become veterinarians. NHVDL interactions with regional practicing veterinarians are important in helping undergraduates identify work experience opportunities with these practitioners. Enrolled and prospective undergraduate students seeking information about careers in veterinary medicine and the UNH preveterinary medicine program should contact one of the veterinarians listed.
