Description of current research and/or professional activities:

My research focuses on three areas of dairy cattle nutrition: (1) protein and amino acid requirements, (2) effects of altering protein and amino acid nutrition on growth and milk protein production, and (3) evaluation of the application of advances in ruminant protein and amino acid nutrition on dairy cattle performance. The overall goal is to identify feeding strategies and technologies that will increase milk casein production and allow for desired levels of dairy cattle production with minimum intake of dietary protein. A more specific goal is to acquire data that is needed to improve computer models designed to formulate diets for dairy cattle.

I am a member of Regional Research Projects NC-119, "Management Systems for Improved Decision Making and Profitability of Dairy Herds" and NC-185, "Metabolic Relationships in Supply of Nutrients for Lactating Cows." Since 1997, I have been a member of the committee responsible for the publication of the next revision of the National Research Council Requirements for Dairy Cattle. In addition to my teaching and research responsibilities, I serve as the Faculty Coordinator for Farm Operations in the department.
